Mission Hills Canyon Home

About the Project:

Located in Mission Hills, California, known for its eclectic mix of modern, contemporary, mission, craftsmen and bungalow styles, this new home borrows characteristics from the home it replaced, but with a contemporary flair reflecting the stylistic preferences of its owners. This home, designed, of necessity, as a replacement for a structurally compromised house takes its shape from the footprint of its predecessor to minimize intrusion into the canyon site, while respecting the scale of its neighbors.

This client challenged me with a program calling for a new home that would capitalize on the assets of this very special site in a fresh and innovative way. I sought to open the house to the tranquil views through the tree limbs into the native canyon by day and to the city lights of the downtown skyline to the south by night. This “upside-down” house places open living spaces on the uppermost level, private spaces at the canyon side of the middle level, and play and guest spaces at the garden level below.
